5 Benefits of Frozen Seafood

If you’re new to cooking fish at home, one approach is to consider purchasing high-quality, frozen fish portions (check out our new retail bags of frozen cod and haddock!). Here are five reasons to purchase frozen fish:

1. Shelf Life

Frozen fish can keep in your freezer for months, giving you more time to learn about the fish, best cooking methods and recipe ideas at your leisure! For best results, we recommend thawing fish gradually under refrigeration the night before you plan to cook it.

2. Price

Hello savings! When fish have a longer shelf logistical costs to the supplier can go down (ever try mailing something with next-day shipping?!), and that means it will cost less for the retailer to buy the fish which can equal a lower price point to the end buyer. 3. Sustainability

Buying frozen fish actually helps the environment more than you would think. As mentioned earlier, that express shipping costs suppliers more, and it can have a higher carbon footprint. You don’t have to take our word for it – in this Upbeat article, Paul Greenberg said, “If you’re worried about your carbon footprint, frozen fish that is frozen on site where they’re caught are a much lower carbon footprint than fresh fish. Fresh fish … often have to be airfreighted.”

4. Nutritional Value

Freezing technology used by the seafood industry is far more advanced than the freezer in your kitchen. The flash-freezing process (for our products this happens in Iceland) seals in all the nutrients and protects the protein and fat structures so that when the fish reaches your pan, the texture, flavor and nutritional value is preserved!

Another important benefit of frozen seafood? The portion sizes! Most people can’t stand the thought of eating cooked fish that is over 3 days old (Nor should you, per the USDA).
